About Coral Walker

An Unconventional
Path to Art

My path:

My journey with painting began unexpectedly around 2015, as I coloured alongside my children and felt a gentle curiosity awaken toward oil paints. In 2018, I stepped away from academia to give more of myself to writing, illustration, and painting. I have been mostly self-taught, learning through steady practice, especially during a time of deep loss and significant change in my life.

What I notice:

I often notice the mood in a room, the feeling that lingers behind a gesture, and the quiet relationship between a person and their surroundings. This way of seeing shapes how I paint: figures blend with each other, with objects, patterns, plants, and spaces, rather than standing apart.

At the heart of my work is a quiet sense that nothing stands alone. When I paint people, I do not see them as finished or separate, but as shifting fields shaped by feeling, memory, and the subtle presence of others and the world around them. Figures often blend with patterns, plants, animals, landscapes, and the structures we build, moving gently between individuality and connection, the visible and the hidden, the human and the wider living field.

These enquiries move through three connected bodies of work: Self & Inner Life, Relationship & Human Presence, and Living Field, Spirit & Nature.

Art as freedom:

Painting gives me a different kind of knowing, one guided by intuition, feeling, and the movement of my hand. I begin without deciding what the painting should become, simply responding to colour, line, and form as they appear.

Sometimes faces, figures, birds, plants, or structures appear without being planned. I follow them with curiosity, letting the painting find its own quiet coherence. It is not a coherence I impose, but one that reveals itself through the freedom of making.

[ About Artist ]

My visual art is just one part of my growing creative story. Through Bench By the River, I invite you to join me as I use writing to explore the same questions that inspire my paintings: the mysteries of our inner feelings, the waves of emotion, the connections we share, the pain of loss, the search for meaning, and the ways we connect with the world. If this speaks to you, I welcome you to learn more [Bench By the River].

My work in words:

I was born in China and now live in Penarth, Wales. My early years were shaped by a strong academic atmosphere, yet I found myself quietly drawn to writing, drawing, and the art of telling stories. In 1999, I came to the UK to begin a PhD in computer science, and later spent many years working at Cardiff University.
